Celebrity stylists are talking about 2020 as the year that ushers in all things chic, trendy and absolutely gorgeous about hairstyles, haircuts, hair colors, haircare and hair health. Here are the top trends the year ahead brings.
Haircut
When it comes to haircuts, it’s the short haircut that’s super popular. Generally speaking, long locks are out. According to celebrity hairstylists, the short hair trend will be a sort of “backlash for the monster long hair extension trend” that we witnessed over the past few years. Kaia Gerber and Karlie Kloss as specific examples, currently sporting super-chic and super-short styles. Another haircut trend is the modern shag.
When it comes to medium to long hair, the modern shag makes sense, because it incorporates that relaxed, tousled texture. They can be just one length or in fewer layers. Bangs, more specifically curtain bangs, give a cool, vintage vibe. They’re low maintenance and can easily be grown out into face-framing layers – perfect for any face shape and suits every hair type.
Hairstyle
On hairstyles, it’s the short hairstyle that will reign supreme – the classic bob. Women want more versatility and can easily achieve a sleek and sophisticated bob with the right length for their face. Or, if they cut it to hit collarbone length, they can add tousled texture for a more youthful and casual look. It’s not the super-sleek, polished bob, but the soft, tousled, and relaxed version for a softer appearance.
The natural texture is also in, whether that means tousled and relaxed hair or curly hair. Instead of taking it away with heat tools, accentuate the look with heat tools. Beach waves will continue. They’re soft, tousled, and relaxed, so a good texture spray and a high-quality heat tool are good to have. Textured braids are another trend. Beachy waves plus textured braids are the rave, such as worn by Blake Lively.
Hair Color
When it comes to hair colors, warmer hair colors will be huge – from warm blondes to auburn highlights and mahogany spice balayage. They are a lot of colors that don’t require much upkeep and will grow out nicely using techniques like face-framing highlights that’ll brighten up the look. Solid hair colors are in, too. More women are done with highlights refusing to stay long hours at the salon and opting instead for single-process color. Blondes are getting highlights less frequently and asking for more glosses in between. Shorter hair will call for bolder color and solid colors coming back.

Hair accessories are the final hair trend for 2020. We’re already seeing a pearl and rhinestone clip obsession, but it will definitely transition in 2020 with way more – think more minimal looks as well as headbands and big ’90s scrunchies. Hair accessories are the easiest way to dress up a basic hairstyle. Headbands and cute clips will always dress up day-old (or more) hair and are great to use to tie up hair for commuting to the city and fighting the humidity in the summer months.
